Maja Lithander Smith, owner of Found by Maja in San Francisco, has set up shop at Field+Fort Annex in Summerland to share her curated finds with a Santa Barbara audience this month.

On a recent Thursday evening, the Field+Fort Annex in Summerland transformed into a world of glamour and beauty for the opening-night celebration of Maja Lithander Smith’s pop-up shop.

Smith, owner of Found by Maja in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights, brought her curated collection of global treasures to Santa Barbara County.

The annex, adjacent to the Field+Fort Shop and Feast Café at 2580 Lillie Ave., is typically home to garden furniture curated by designer Kyle Irwin and partner Susie Bechtel.

It’s currently showcasing an explosion of color and highly curated collectibles, however. Vignettes of fabrics, rugs, lighting and antiques have created an electric atmosphere, inviting guests to browse and buy.

Smith, a consummate treasure hunter, sources vintage pieces from world markets and artisan friends through four global purchasing forays a year.

“I try to buy as much as possible from women and small artisans,” she told Noozhawk. “Most of it is handcrafted, hand painted, and most of it done by women.”

  • Not everything is green.

Her family’s recent purchase of a Santa Barbara cottage has further inspired her collecting passion.

The event’s ambiance rivaled that of a garden party in Soho, London or Paris.

Guests, many heeding the suggestion to dress in green (one of Smith’s favorite colors), included notable locals like Susan McCaw, Calgary Alvansino, Valerie Rice, Jennifer Smith, Anne Towbes, Cynthia and Eric Spivey, Justine Roddick, Marleen Veloz, Michelle Ebbin, Maggie Geyer, Elisabeth Fowler, Sally Enthoven, Leesa Goldmuntz, Olivia Joffrey, Jennifer Walsh and Teri Lebow.

They enjoyed hors d’oeuvres prepared by Field+Fort staff, including caviar in pastry and herbed chicken meatballs, accompanied by champagne and a specialty Paloma cocktail.

Smith’s love for color was evident throughout the space, with upholstered pieces, commodes, ceramics and accessories in a vibrant palette of blues, greens, pinks and the signature “Maja blue.”

Her table settings showcased a mix of Marché aux Puces vintage linens from Paris, Terre Mêlée plates, Murano glassware and pieces by artisan Davide Fuin.

The Found by Maja pop-up at the Field+Fort Annex is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Oct. 24.
